CBD stands for cannabidiol: a one of the naturally occurring cannabinoids that is found in the Hemp variety of the Cannabis plant. This is extracted from the plant, and can then be infused into various products for human use. When we use CBD products, the phytocannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. This is a biological system composed of endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. Endocannabinoids are endogenous lipid-based retrograde neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors throughout the central nervous system and the nervous system.
As you can probably guess, it is an extremely important system that is vital for regulating many bodily functions. Interestingly, this biological system was not actually discovered until as late as 1992! This means the potential therapeutic effects of CBD are still a fairly new phenomenon, and are still being studied to this day.
At DR.K , we use Broad-Spectrum CBD extract. This extract contains a broad combination of the beneficial phytocannabinoids and terpenes found naturally in the Hemp plant, without the inclusion of THC. Broad-Spectrum extract provides us with a synergistic combination of some of the most powerful plant compounds and terpenes in the world, which can provide the human endocannabinoid system with optimum support.
These compounds include CBC, CBN, CBG, and more.
Terpenes are the aromatic oils found in plants; they provide plants with their unique scents and flavours, and - in the case of Hemp - can also provide powerful beneficial effects. These synergistic compounds greatly influence the effects of the cannabinoids to provide a result that you would not experience from CBD alone.
CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. This system plays a vital role in regulating various bodily functions, including the immune system and the brain. This means it can have an effect on our mood, our sleep, our pain sensation, our stress levels, and more. If this system does not function properly, it can lead to various health complications.
It is believed that using CBD can help to improve the function of this system by restoring balance to it, which can help to promote better health and wellbeing. One of the ways in which it can do this is by mimicking and augmenting the effects of the naturally occurring ‘endogenous cannabinoids’ in our bodies. Scientific studies suggest that using CBD can also increase the amount of these natural cannabinoids in the body by preventing them from being broken down too quickly.
Different people may use CBD for a number of different reasons, including:
We extract CBD from the stems, stalks, leaves and flowers of the Hemp plant through a process known as supercritical CO2 extraction. This process involves exposing CO2 to very low temperatures, and very high pressures. This CO2 then enters a ‘supercritical state’ meaning it can travel like a gas, but can absorb compounds like a liquid. We can pass this CO2 through a chamber containing our organic dried hemp plant material, whereby it will absorb all of the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, plant-lipids, and plant oils. This eliminates the need for harsh chemicals, and ensures our plants are treated with the respect they deserve.
Next, we put this paste-like CBD-rich extract through a further purifying technique known as ‘winterisation’. During this process, the extract is soaked in ethanol and then frozen in order to separate out the unwanted waxes, chlorophyll, and THC. This leaves us with a thick, dark, syrup-like product. This oil is then distilled: this removes volatites and residual oils and leaves us with our broad-spectrum CBD extract. This extract can then be infused into various products, such as oils and creams.
One common misconception about CBD is that it can produce psychoactive effects. This is entirely untrue. The reason this misconception exists is because CBD is extracted from the Hemp variety of the Cannabis plant. It is well known that using cannabis will cause people to get ‘high’, but this is purely due to its containment of an entirely different cannabinoid: THC. Broadly speaking, ‘hemp’ refers to any cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% THC, whereas ‘marijuana’ refers to any cannabis plant that contains more than 0.3%. This is a very important distinction, and it explains why using marijuana will get you ‘high’, but using hemp products will not.
Studies have shown that THC activates the brain's reward system through the body’s cannabinoid receptors. Like most other recreational drugs, THC stimulates neurons in the reward system to release the chemical dopamine at higher levels than you would experience whilst sober. This flood of dopamine creates a psychoactive or ‘high’ experience. This can provide some users with pleasure, but it can also create unpleasant side effects such as paranoia, anxiety, or nausea.
At DR.K, all of our products are infused with broad-spectrum CBD extract. This means that all traces of THC have been removed. Although a very small amount of THC would not give you any psychoactive effects, it is nice to be able to rest assured that your CBD products are completely free of THC.
Our THC-free formulation provides you with the assurance that your CBD products are 100% non-psychoactive. Additionally, it allows for the global distribution of our products into international markets that have zero tolerance for any levels of THC.
At DR.K, we offer both CBD oils and various CBD creams. So what is the difference between these two types of product, and which one should I use?
CBD oils are used ‘sublingually’ - this means they are used by dropping the product under the tongue. The CBD and other cannabinoids will enter the bloodstream, and interact with our internal endocannabinoid system to help promote various therapeutic effects.
It is believed that using CBD orally can mimic and augment the effects of the naturally occurring ‘endogenous cannabinoids’ in our bodies. Scientific studies suggest that using CBD can also increase the amount of these natural cannabinoids in the body by preventing them from being broken down too quickly. This can help to restore balance to the endocannabinoid system, which can promote better health and general wellbeing.
In contrast, the CBD from our hand cream, face cream, balm, and muscle rub will not enter the bloodstream. As we apply the product, the cannabinoids are deeply absorbed into the skin and will then interact with cannabinoid receptors underneath the skin's surface. Studies suggest this can fire up the body’s natural endocannabinoids, and help to reduce inflammation and soothe pain.
CBD creams are ideal for those seeking pain and inflammation relief on a specific area of the body, or for a specific skin problem. CBD can be used as an anti-inflammatory, and may help to promote reduced redness, reduced swelling, and reduced pain in targeted areas.
